On smoking…

It’s your right, do it with elegance

I detest people that smoke. But then again, I appreciate that it’s a personal choice. I have close friends that smoke that I don’t mind. I embrace them as they also do put up with me of my idiosyncrasy that don’t please them too.

Like cursing and putting out ‘F’ bombs, I always believe there’s always a way to do with elegance, if you have to do it.

What’s not elegant is when is when smokers puff away at wrong places and I happen to be there too. It’s like defecating openly. You wouldn’t do it unless you are sick mentally.

I feel sorry for such folks because they are sick mentally while also angry at them for they have no regard of others. They could be doing that to project their ego and bigness that they don’t have to regard for others. These folks are bully but then again, like all bullies, they are distracting themselves from other real issues, hence I go back to feel sorry for them again. Most of the times though, I get tachycardia. Such instances are;

  1. During morning walks or commute and a smoker walks past at a walk way.
  2. Anyone that smokes in a clearly non-smoking area. (If a companion does that, I will nicely remind them, but I won’t insist they put it away. I will just remind myself to spend less time with these folks in the future, or not at all.)
  3. A neighbor smoking at the balcony – I feel sorry for people living with them but I hate it that I am forced to share the air as I live in an apartment building. It’s their right to smoke, it’s my fault I can’t afford my own landed home, but it would be nice if they could be a little considerate.

I find it elegant for smokers who do these;

  1. Going out of the way to have a puff when they want to. I reciprocate, at times, by going along with them to continue our conversation. I don’t hate smoking because I can’t stand smoking. I hate it when it’s done at the wrong places.
  2. Another smoker telling off a fellow smoker when they are about to light up at a non-smoking area.
  3. Quit smoking – or make sure nobody sees them doing it.

I have experimented with smoking. Good thing I hated it, perhaps out of disgust and also being aware of perils it brings. Also, I was encouraged that my dad quit smoking when he wanted to. He used to smoke when I was a young boy. He would do it after dinner by taking a walk as he puffs away. One day, he just declared he would stop and he just did – just like that. That showed me that anyone can quit, if he wanted to stop.

So for those who are still smoking, you can stop. Only if you want to. If you do have to smoke, do it with elegance. I admire people who knows where to shit your shit.
