Phrase of the day “Canary in a coal mine”

I am reminded of the phrase above – Canary in a coal mine. It means an early warning mechanism of sorts. Evidently originated from the practice of having canaries inside mines to detect hazardous air quality. If the canary collapse, it signals a warning that air quality has become hazardous. Obviously, it’s no longer practiced in our modern world. This has been replaced by electronic sensors measuring presence or significance of hazardous gasses like carbon monoxide.

Today, it’s an English phrase to mean an early warning.
